Creating
Fog & Mist...
Creating a simple mist effect in Photoshop can be done quite easily in
9 steps by using layers... These steps can be converted into an action
but I prefer to do the steps as described below so I can adjust the effect
to suit each individual image... The image above changes from the original
image to one with the effect applied at 50% then with the full effect,
you can of course adjust the final effect to suit the image you are working
on... This also gives a soft focus effect on portraits...
Rollover Image...
1... Click on Image... Select Mode... Click on 8bits/channel... (if using
16 bit image)
2... Duplicate the original layer by opening the layers folder (F7) and
dragging the background layer to the icon as highlighted in green below......

3...From the Menu bar click on Filter... Select Blur... Click on Gaussian
Blur... Select an amount to 60 pixels and click OK...
4... Now duplicate the background copy that you have just applied the
Gaussian Blur to... You should now have three layers in your layers pallet...
The original background layer, background copy and background copy 2...
5... Select the background copy layer in the layers pallet... Go to the
top and click on the blending mode option and select Lighten as the blending
option and set the opacity to 50% or to suit the image...
6... Select the background copy 2 layer in the layers pallet... Go to
the top and click on the blending mode option as shown in the image right
and select Darken as the blending option and set the opacity to 40% or
to suit the image...
7... Now in the layers pallet click on the little box to the right of
the little eye icon on the background copy layer, this should put a little
chain in the box meaning that background copy 2 and background copy are
now linked together as shown in the image right...
8... Now hold down the Ctrl+E keys to merge these two layers into one
layer... You will now have only two layers the background and background
copy 2...
9... Select background copy 2 and go to the top and click on the blending
mode option and select Overlay as the blending option and set the opacity
to suit the image...
