TIPS

SOME BASIC TIPS ON BETTER SHOOTING... (This tip is about beach scenes...)

One of the major problems with shooting beach scenes when the sun is very bright is exposure... The images often come out with washed out colours and blown highlights...

Exposure correction

The image above left is what the camera thinks the exposure should be... 1/2000 second @ f/4.5 with the ISO set to 400...

The image above right has received 1 stop less of light and gives a truer representation of what the scene actually looked like...
This can be achieved by any of the four methods listed below...

1... Increasing the shutter speed to 1/4000 and keep the aperture at f/4.5 and the ISO at 400...
2... Closing the aperture down to f/6.3 and keep the shutter speed at 1/2000  and the ISO at 400...
3... Increase the ISO to 800 and keep the shutter speed at 1/2000 and the aperture at f/4.5...
4... Dial in +1 compensation if your cameras has this feature... Yes, to decrease the amount of light reaching the sensor by 1 stop you must set your exposure compensation to +1...

Any of the three methods mentioned will halve the light reaching the sensor which is equivalent to 1 stop less exposure...

If in doubt when faced with tricky lighting conditions bracket your exposures by taking shots at 1 stop over the camera's suggested exposure, the camera's suggested exposure, and 1 stop under the camera's suggested exposure...
