Achitecture Hints & Tips... (A work in progress)

York MinsterArchitectural photography relies entirely on the quality of the light rather than the quantity of light... The worst time to take architectural exterior shots is around mid day in the middle of summer with a clear sky... The lighting is harsh around these times making the images too contrasty with dense black shadows and blown highlights detroying the finer details... The best time to shoot architecture is early morning or late evening when the sun is lower in the sky and the light is softer... The light at these times tends to be warmer giving the image a nice glow to it...

In winter though, shooting throughout the day is quite possible as the sun is lower and weaker in the sky retaining a certain amount of detail in the image...

This image was taken at 10:47am on February 16th in the weak winter sunshine... The sunshine is just strong enough to pick out the highlights and the shadows are soft and long...
