Accented Edges
...

The Accented Edges filter can add a metallic feeling to an image... Take this sepia effect image of a mooring ring, below left; below right is the same image with the Accented Edges filter applied... The Accented Edges filter will only work on 8 bit images so if you have a 16 bit image you will first need to convert your image...

image
1... Click on Image... Select Mode... Click on 8bits/channel... (if using 16 bit image)
2... Duplicate the original layer by opening the layers folder (F7 key) and dragging the background layer to the duplicate icon at the bottom of the pallet marked in green...
image
image3... Click on Filter... Select Brush Strokes... Click on Accented Edges... This brings up a new window as shown right... The settings shown are those I used for this 600 x 480 pixel image before shrinking it to 290 x 230 for this tutorial... The effect can be adjusted to your personal taste by moving the Edge Width, Edge Brightness and Smoothness sliders... When you are happy with the effect shown in the preview box (not shown here) Click on OK...

4... I left the opacity at 100% for the Accented image but if you want to change the opacity Click on the layers pallet and alter the settings to suit your image...

5... I left the Mode as Normal for my tutorial but some of the other options can produce pleasing effects too... Try clicking on the layers pallet and changing the mode from Normal to see what you can come up with...

Emboss...

The Emboss Effect filter can add a 3D metallic feeling to an image take this sepia effect image of a mooring ring, below left, below right is the same image with the Emboss Effect filter applied... The Emboss Effect filter will only work on 8 bit images so if you have a 16 bit image you will first need to convert your image...

image
1... Duplicate the original layer by opening the layers folder (F7 key) and dragging the background layer to the duplicate icon at the bottom of the pallet marked in green...
image
image2... Click on Filter... Select Stylize... Click on Emboss... This brings up a new window, part of which is shown on the right... The settings shown are those I used for this 600 x 480 pixel image before shrinking it to 290 x 230 for this tutorial... The effect can be adjusted to your personal taste by moving the Angle, Height and Amount sliders... When you are happy with the effect shown in the preview box (not shown here) Click on OK...

3... The Embossed image, above right, is set at 100% opacity but to lessen the effect Click on the layers folder and adjust the Opacity of the layer to suit the image...
I changed the layer Mode to Multiply for this tutorial but some of the other options can produce pleasing effects too...

Extrude Filter
...

The extrude filter can add a feeling of motion or a feeling of radiance to an image... Below left is a sepia effect image of a mooring ring, below right is the same image with the Extrude filter applied... The extrude filter will only work on 8 bit images so if you have a 16 bit image you will first need to convert your image...
image
1... Click on Image... Select Mode... Click on 8bits/channel... (if using 16 bit image)
Duplicate the original layer by opening the layers folder (F7 key) and dragging the background layer to the duplicate icon at the bottom of the pallet marked in green...

image
2... Click on Filter... Select Stylize... Click on Extrude... This brings up a new window as shown right... I’ve found that a good starting point is to set the Size to about 1/120 of the pictures actual length in pixels... The greater the number in the Depth box, the longer the extrude strokes will be... The settings shown are those I used for this 600 x 480 pixel image before shrinking it to 300 x 240 for this tutorial... Click on OK...

3... Click on the layers pallet and adjust the Opacity of the layer... Change the 100% opacity value marked in green to somewhere between 30-60% to suit the image, I used 50% for the Extrude image...

I left the Mode as Normal for my tutorial but some of the other options can produce pleasing effects too... Try clicking on the layers pallet and changing the mode from Normal to see what you can come up with...

Glowing Edges
...

The Glowing Edges filter can add an old painted metallic feeling to a sepia effect image... The mooring ring image shown below left can look like the image below right after the Glowing Edges filter has been applied... The Glowing Edges filter will only work on 8 bit images so if you have a 16 bit image you will first need to convert your image..
image
1... Click on Image... Select Mode... Click on 8bits/channel... (if using 16 bit image)

The effect can be adjusted to your personal taste by moving the Edge Width, Edge Brightness and Smoothness sliders... Click on OK when you are happy with the effect...
4... The image labelled Glowing, above right, is left at 100% Opacity but to lessen the effect Click on Edit... Fade Accented Edges... Adjusting the slider until the desired effect is achieved, or Click on the layers pallet and adjust the Opacity of the layer...
