The Notes Tool... (Shortcut N key)

If you notice on the notes tool icon there is a little triangular black arrow in the bottom right corner, which means there are more than one option available with this tool... If you left click and hold the mouse button down, or right mouse click on the icon in Photoshop all the options available for this tool will appear...

This handy little icon which is not used as much as it should be by photographers, me included I might add, allows you to write notes or record audio notes... This is extremely handy when doing manipulation to work because if you are like me you can never remember which technique you used on some images to achieve that effect...

When you select the notes tool from the tools pallet the menu bar at the top changes to the one shown above giving you various options...
  • In the Author box you can add a name of the person adding the notes, in this case me...
  • In the Font box you can choose from the drop down list which font you want to use for the notes...
  • You can also choose which size font the note is written in from the drop down list in the Size box...
  • From the colour box you can choose which colour you want the note header to be, the default is yellow...
  • There is also a Clear All button not shown on the image above to enable you to delete all notations...

To write a note just select the Notes icon and click the left mouse button where you want the note to pop up... This can be dragged anywhere by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the note...
In the image left the note has been attached to the side of the image shown by the green cuffed pointer... All you need to do to read the notes is double click the little coloured note...
To close the note just click on the little white square indicated by the red cuffed pointer... If you wish to delete the note just right click on the little coloured note and select Delete Note from the menu that appears...

If you chose the audio annotation tool and have a microphone attached to your computer it can be used to create verbal notes instead of written ones...

When you select the audio annotation tool from the tools pallet the menu bar at the top changes to the one shown above giving you various options...
  • In the Author box you can add a name of the person adding the notes, in this case me again...
  • From the colour box you can choose which colour you want the note header to be, the default is yellow but I changed this for my audio option...
  • There is also a Clear All button to enable you to delete all notations...

When you click on the audio annotation button then click on the screen this little window on the left opens... All you do is click on the start button and commence dictating your notes... Once the start button is pressed it becomes greyed out like the stop button is here and the stop button then becomes active... You of course click on the stop button when you have finished adding your comments...

A little speaker appears to let you know there is an audio annotaion attached to the image as shown by the blue cuffed pointer on the right...

You access the audio comments by clicking on that little speaker icon...
